Project Summary: Another extremely challenging project in the Green Monster Portfolio. Here are just a few of the issues that were dealt with during this installation: The entire property is located on a significant slope. This made it difficult to transport heavy materials (wall block and aggregate) to the bottom of the work site with any method other than manual labor. Natural springs are located on this property, making for wet conditions. To further complicate matters, the native soil is high in clay resulting in water retention and a slippery hill. A new septic system was installed just before the landscape installation. Various underground tanks and pipes had to be avoided with equipment to prevent damage. Much of the previous construction changed the water flow dynamics of the property. Our earlier days of the project was spent in wet, slippery, sloppy conditions until drainage was installed and water diverted from static conditions at the top of the hill. Last but not least, we were on a deadline so the property would be ready for a wedding reception. The installation was completed by working from the bottom of the stairs, up the hill to the top of the property. Unfortunately, it was quickly realized that the only means of transporting wall block, pavers and aggregate down the hill was by wheelbarrow and 5 gallon buckets. As the steps were built, drainage was installed on both sides, to ensure water continues to flow away from the hardscape. Construction equipment was carefully moved into place on the hill by negotiating over and/or around the newly installed septic system. Equipment stayed in place on the hill, working up until reaching level ground up top. Walls, stairs, and the main walkway were then installed at the top, providing access from the garage and parking area above, to the cottage. The homeowner did a great job of completing our effort with the installation of plantings and mulch! A removable wooden bridge also provides access to the septic clean-outs.
