Project Summary: This hillside had become overgrown with hemlock and pine saplings, as well as a thick bed of leaves. For years, this area of the property received little attention and little use at this lakefront property. The goal of this project was to create a low maintenance landscape while maintaining a natural and woodsy sort of feel, to maintain consistency with its surroundings. Local boulders were brought in to create a ledgy hillside look. Fraser Firs, Mugo Pines, Bird's Nest Spruce and various junipers provided the natural look of native plant life. Rhododendron, Azalea, and burning bush incorporate evergreen and deciduous leaf species with added benefit of spring and fall color. A wide range of perennials ranging from shade loving ferns and astilbe, to sunny coneflower and sedum, to groundcover geranium, will produce color throughout the season. Following the installation of all plant material, a layer of bark mulch was applied to retain water for the plant life. In the coming years, falling needles from the large surrounding pine trees will provide a more natural groundcover.
